| This is very hard to read, so I will
put a transcript of it here. This is from the Superintendent of the
Wichita Halls State Hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas. For those of you
that don't know, Susan was given Laudenum (an opiate) for pain after the
birth of her last child. When the government decided to take it off of
the market, they did nothing to step these women down from this horribly
addictive drug. (We have an aunt in Georgia who had the same thing happen to
her.) So when these women had to go cold turkey from it, they either
died or "went crazy." Susan died eventually in the state hospital in
Wichita Falls. This is a progress report of Susan in the hospital. It was a telegram and it reads: August 12, 1929 Mrs. Susan Goode Mrs. W.A. Gotcher Novice, Texas Dear Madam, In answer to your letter regarding your mother, Mrs. Susan Goode, will say that she is doing about as usual, she walks about the ward and apparently is having a good time. She eats plenty and rests well at night. She never mentions home or homefolks. Yours very truly, Chas. W. Castner, |
This may be hard to read, so I will transcribe
it as well. It is a memorial card printed at the time of her death:
